Table of Contents
Squarespace offers a variety of ways that you can sell online and these are broken down into the following categories. Learn the differences between the different product types to make sure you’re selling in the most efficient, cost-effective way possible.
Squarespace E-Commerce Categories
Squarespace has 2 E-Commerce Categories:
Products & Services (What’s covered in this blog post)
Digital Products (or ‘Content & Memberships’)
These differ in settings, how they’re listed, what checkout looks like, and the transaction fee rate. Digital Products include Courses, Member Sites, Blog with a paywall, Video on demand, and more.
Within Products & Services, there are 4 kinds of products you can sell:
Squarespace also offers the ability to print Custom Merch on demand with Printful. You can enable this on your website by going to Products & Services > Selling Tools
Where are Squarespace Products & Services located?
Log into your account and click on the image of your website.
On the left, you should an off-white menu with black text. Below ‘Website’ should be ‘Products & Services.’
Don’t see it there?
This menu layout can be edited, so if you didn’t set up your website or if you’re accessing a website you didn’t create, this menu could look different. If you don’t see it there, hit the forward slash key on your keyboard ( / ) and then type Products into the search bar. Click on ‘Products & Services’ to get taken to the correct page.
New Squarespace Plan tiers are better for sellers
Squarespace made a change in 2025 that simplified their e-commerce experience and lowered pricing for many customers.
Previously, you had to pay for a higher tier of an account in order to sell items. Now, they have new tiers that allow everyone to sell without having to pay more!
For example, you used to have to pay more to sell Digital Products. This was frustrating because it meant that you had to track more subscriptions and their timing. Now, everything is more streamlined.
Squarespace’s email marketing tool called Email Campaigns also got streamlined. This is in addition to your Squarespace subscription, but the tiers are more simplified in 2025. Now, everyone gets access to automations — it just matters how many emails you send out a month.
Find a Squarespace plan that works for your e-commerce goals
The higher tiers are more expensive but the lower tiers aren’t and come with more functionality. We think this is a better model as it allows for fewer hoops and more accessibility to features.
For those selling a lot of content, Plus and Advanced may be good options. However, most of our clients stick with a Core plan.
Don’t forget, these plans are what you pay for your site’s hosting and builder. This isn’t just the price of being able to sell on the platform. It’s what makes your site live on the internet and how you’re able to create it.
Below is an overview of the new tiers. ⚠️ Make sure to look at Squarespace’s pricing page before making any decisions as this information is subject to change.
There is also more information the differences, such as the Basic Plan not directly receiving UPS or USPS shipping labels.
Basic Plan
$16/mo when paid annually
Products, Services: 2% transaction fee
Digital Content & Memberships (Digital Products): 7% transaction fee
Core Plan
$23/mo when paid annually
Products & Services: 0% transaction fee
Digital Content & Memberships (Digital Products): 5% transaction fee
Plus Plan
$39/mo when paid annually
Products & Services: 0% transaction fee
Digital Content & Memberships (Digital Products): 1% transaction fee
Advanced Plan
$99/mo when paid annually
Products & Services: 0% transaction fee
Digital Content & Memberships (Digital Products): 0% transaction fee
Are you on a Personal, Business, Commerce Basic or Commerce Advanced plan?
All of those plans are now considered legacy plans.
Your site will renew as that plan (not for forever though) until you make a switch or they discontinue it.
New customers cannot sign up for the old plans anymore.
If you leave a legacy plans, you cannot switch back.
Make sure you read the full breakdown of what’s in the new plans so that you’re selecting something that works for you and your business. For example, downgrading to a Basic Plan doesn’t allow for some custom code functionality.
Do you have a Digital Products Plan?
This used to be an additional subscription required to sell Digital Content & Memberships (Digital Products). Depending on your plan, the transaction fees can change:
No plan: 9% ($0/month)
Starter: 7% ($9/month)
Core: 3% ($29/month)
Pro: 0% ($89/month)
With Squarespace’s new plan, you do not need a Digital Products plan. There are transaction fees that range from 0% - 7% depending on your plan.
⚠️ Digital Products Plans are no longer available to new subscribers:
If you’re on a Business plan and you click on ‘Content & Memberships’ in your menu, you’ll see this at the bottom. If you select ‘Explore more plans,’ it will take you to the new Squarespace tiers — not a digital products plan.

Selling Physical Products on Squarespace
What defines a Physical Product?
Physical products are either shipped or delivered to the customer. You must enter the dimensions when creating the listing and your customer must enter their shipping address when purchasing.
How do you create a new Squarespace Product listing?
If you haven’t created any products, you can select:
Products & Services and pick from title cards with different product types. This is nice because it gives you an brief overview of what each section is.
OR you can click Products (under Products & Services in the menu on the left), then the Services category on the top, and then select the white button (‘Add Physical Product’).
In all other instances, you can do one of the following:
Import Products (next to the black button at the top) from Etsy, Shopify, Big Cartel, or using Squarespace’s CSV template.
Select the Add Product (black button at the top), which will open a menu for you to select Download. Some people find this easier as some of the products have subcategories that are listed here.
Group Event and Consulting Package are both under the Service category.
How to Sell a Physical Product as a Subscription
To sell these, you would create a standard Physical Product listing and select Subscriptions under Inventory .
You can customize:
If the customer can only buy it as a subscription or if they have a choice between a subscription (which can be a discounted price) or a one-time purchase.
How frequently they get the product.
What you should know about Physical Product Subscriptions before you sell them
Subscriptions are automatically unlimited. Unlike regular Physical Products where you can set a specific number that you have in stock, Subscriptions don’t have a limit and you can’t modify that.
Subscriptions customers get an account on your website, so the next time they visit they’ll see Sign In in your navigation bar. This allows them to modify or cancel their subscription.
If you need to edit your subscription, depending on what you want to change, it may only impact new customers. If the change you want to make for existing customers can’t be done, you can have to discontinue the subscription instead (and sell a new subscription with the changes made).
You can modify the price for existing customers but there is a delay. Once you set a new price, Squarespace will email them letting them know of the change. 7 days later, it will go into effect (but if they renewed in the meantime, they will be charged the old price).
You can delay Subscription renewals by rescheduling the order date. This is handy if you are low on inventory or will be out of the office. Customers don’t have the option to do this on their own, so you could offer it if some asked to pause their subscription.
If you change the payment processor you use on your website, customers will have to repurchase them. This doesn’t frequently happen, but if you had to change your payment processor company or account, all subscriptions would need to be resubscribed.
Selling Services on Squarespace
What defines a Service?
Services are non-physical offers that don’t require shipping or scheduling at the time of purchase. There are 3 categories you’ll see on your site:
Service
Group Events: Can be used for in-person events
Consulting Packages: Coaching, etc.
All of these are exactly the same! Don’t let the names fool you. They all have the same selling options when you create them.
If you want to sell a Service such as a call at a specific time where the customer selects the day/time, we recommend looking into Acuity or Calendly as those platforms will allows them to pick a slot and pay.

Selling Digital Downloads on Squarespace
What defines a Digital Download? (Sometimes called a ‘Download Product’)
Squarespace’s Digital Downloads are unique as they deliver a link to your customers to download a PDF or other digital file that you’ve uploaded.
This link expires after 24 hours and customers can request a new link from Squarespace if needed.
Note: You can’t sell these as subscriptions as each listing is good for only one link.
If can’t upload the file (for example, you may be selling access to a Google Doc), you can create a PDF or txt file that includes a link to what you want to sell. This way the customer receives a link to something and from there they get instructions on how to access what the purchased.

Selling Gift Cards on Squarespace
What defines a Gift Card?
Gift Cards come in set amounts (that you define) and can only be used to purchase things from your website’s store.
Squarespace’s Digital Downloads are unique as they deliver a link to your customers to download a PDF or other digital file that you’ve uploaded.
What you should know before selling Gift Cards:
Each listing automatically comes with 4 amount options. You can add or delete options.
Gift Cards come with an email that’s delivered tot he recipient of the gift card. You can customize this email. (See more here.)
Each Gift Card has a unique code.
Only items your Gift Cards are used to purchase displayed in your Sales Analytics — not the Gift Cards themselves.
In order to start selling on Squarespace, you’ll need to add a payment processor
The primary payment processors you can use are:
Squarespace Payments: Squarespace’s own built-in solution.
Stripe: Allows you to accept most debit and credit cards.
PayPal: Great for international payments but does require customers log in. If they don’t have a PayPal account, they can’t pay. (You can offer PayPal in addition to Stripe.)
Square: Is for in-person payments only and can be used for cash and card transactions.
You can also add Afterpay or Clearpay. These allow customers to apply to pay for items over set installments with 0% interest. You can only use this if you’ve already added Stripe or Squarespace Payments AND are found elligible.
All of the payment processors will charge you a processing fee.
This rate can change depending on the company you select and your location. Get links and learn more by reading this Squarespace help article.
In addition to processing fees from the company you use to process payments, Squarespace charges transaction fees
Product & Services Transaction Fees
I know, this isn’t fun news. Unfortunately, it is an industry standard across other platforms as well. There are some platforms like ThriveCart that don’t charge transaction fees. Instead, you pay a flat rate to use the platform.
For some people, that flat rate is more than they anticipate losing in transaction fees in a year. For others selling a ton of products, they’d likely need to decide between doing a higher tier on Squarespace or using a service like ThriveCart.
Remember: Customers don’t see these fees. Bundle in the padding you need to your price so that you’re not losing money.
Digital Product Transaction Fees
Digital Products, which include items like Courses and Member Sites, have a higher transaction fee. If you plan on selling both, make sure you look a both of the rates and pick the tier that works best for you! Take a look at the tiers here: Basic, Core, Plus, and Advanced.
If you paid for your website prior to 2025, you may be on a Legacy Plan that handles selling and transaction fees differently. Check out our overview here.
As you’re calculating fees into your pricing structure, don’t forget about sales tax.
